Uniaxial chiral materials: towards stable, Klienman disallowed non-linear optics

le 4 juin 2009
à 14h30 - Salle de conférence du Bâtiment IDA

Séminaire du Prof Rolfe PETSHKE (Case Western University, Cleveland, USA)

A continuing difficulty with glassy, low-scattering second order non-linear optical materials is that they are hard to make with high dye loading, and also hard to make stable long term. Both dye loading (to which all effects are proportional) and long term stability are important, constraints for practical devices.
I will describe work with Ken Singer and Robert Twieg on forming chiral uniaxial non-linear optical materials. Such materials are consistent with non-linear optical susceptibilities and are stable long term, and are potentially consistent with high dye loading. However, they also require large Klienman disallowed hyperpolarizabilities. I will describe our recent theoretical, synthetic and experimental attempts to make such chromophores and materials.
